Two sisters from Queens were killed yesterday evening after they experienced an almost head-on collision with a drunken driver on Interstate Highway 95.

Mary A. August, 67, and Joan Davidson, 72, were returning from a family party on Christmas Eve when Ted Jackson hit their car almost head-on. Jackson, 31, had spent the day drinking beer with his friend at his home.

According to the police, the two men were on their way to a liquor store to buy more beer when Jackson’s Isuzu I-Mark crossed the I-95 center line and rammed into the sisters’ gold Toyota Tercel.

A helicopter airlifted the two sisters to Mercy Hospital, where August died at 12:40 a.m. Christmas Day, while Davidson died five hours later. Both died from head injuries. Jackson and his friend, on the other hand, were not injured.

At the time of the accident, the police said they found several empty beer cans in Jackson’s car. Under state law, a person is considered drunk when their blood alcohol level is 0.10%. The police reported that Jackson’s blood alcohol level was 0.23%.

The police arrested and charged him with drunken driving and vehicular homicide. Jackson is currently being held at the county jail.
